Ankle Program | Tampa General Hospital

The ankle is a complex joint that, because of its load-bearing nature and the amount of daily wear and tear it endures, is susceptible to injuries and the development of chronic conditions. While conservative treatments are often the first option when addressing pain and other symptoms, ankle surgery may be necessary in more severe cases that don’t respond to nonsurgical therapies. In these cases, surgery may be able to eliminate chronic pain and allow patients to resume everyday activities and improve their overall quality of life. However, some individuals who have experienced multiple ankle surgeries that were successful for a period of time may develop chronic problems later in life that make them a candidate for a total ankle replacement procedure.

The orthopaedic specialists at Tampa General Hospital perform a variety of surgical procedures to treat ankle pain, including total ankle replacement surgery. Our surgeons are highly experienced and fellowship trained, which means they have undergone an additional year of specialty orthopaedic training and are experienced in advanced robotic techniques.

There are a variety of reasons why patients trust TGH surgeons to perform ankle surgery, including:

  • Our extensive experience – In 2019, we performed 32 ankle joint replacements.
  • The variety of surgeries we offer – We offer revision surgery for patients who have previously undergone an ankle replacement procedure as well as minimally invasive total ankle replacement surgery.
  • Our use of advanced technologies – We offer three types of implant systems to provide a continuum of care for our patients, as well as the PROPHECY® Preoperative Navigation system which helps improve implant accuracy.
  • Our recognition as a leader in orthopaedic surgery - We were ranked in the Top 2% of Hospitals in the Nation for Orthopaedic Surgery by U.S. News & World Report for 2023-24.
