Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Biorepository?

A biorepository is defined as a laboratory facility that collects, catalogs and stores samples of biological material, including blood, urine, tissue, cells, DNA, RNA and protein from humans, animals or plants for health research. The TGH-USF Health Precision Medicine Biorepository collects and stores samples obtained from individuals receiving care at Tampa General Hospital or USF Health.

How are samples obtained?

When you come to Tampa General Hospital for a test or procedure, a caregiver will explain our biorepository and ask if you are willing to participate by allowing your specimen sample or samples to be used in the biorepository. If you give consent, you are officially giving consent with paperwork from the TGH-USF Health Precision Medicine Biorepository Internal Review Board (IRB). After participating, a patient’s engagement is minimal, and you always have the option to withdraw your consent by going through the proper IRB process.

What are the benefits of participating in the TGH-USF Health Precision Medicine Biorepository?

Although there are no direct medical benefits to you by having your samples stored in the TGH-USF Health Precision Medicine Biorepository, the information gained by your samples may be beneficial to our academic health system, the community, and for scientific research projects across the country.

How long will the TGH-USF Health Precision Medicine Biorepository store my samples ?

The TGH-USF Health Precision Medicine Biorepository will store your samples for as long as they are useful for medical research, which can range from a short period of time to several years.
